Austria Campsites

When we visited Austria in 1998 we found generally crowded sites in August with small pitches, often with large groups of campers together, but we found a few sites with more room away from the main tourist towns.

We passed through Austria again in May 2006 staying at two sites in the Salzkammergut region and one in Gailtal valley near Villach. These sites were very good with excellent even luxurious facilities especially at Schwand, Wolfgangsee.

In 2008 we travelled through Austria along the Danube on our way to Hungary and returned from the Hungarian border through the Steiermark region then skirted Salzburg to Bavaria.

Site   nearest large town Our opinions

August 1998

Seecamping
Bregenz
campsite Bregenz On the edge of the town at the eastern end of Lake Constance. The main site can be crowded but there is a rough grass field used in the middle of summer. Best to have your own facilities. A typical busy city site.
Schwimmbad Campingplatz
Hall in Tirol
campsite Innsbruck A small town site. We were placed in the small hedged field with the back packer tents which was ok for smaller vans but awkward to get on or off the pitch. There is an MH service point at entrance but it wasn't obvious if we could have parked up outside for the night.
Camping Waldbad.
Dellach im Drautal
campsite Oberdrauberg Crowded site next to large outdoor public swimming pool. Pitches well worn with wooden duckboards used for awning areas by groups of long term Dutch and German campers.
Camping Jodl.
Alt Ossiach
campsite Feldkirchen Pleasant smaller site out of village on south side of lake with terraced grass pitches but not much shade from trees. Good facilities with small bar and restaurant with typical Austrian entertainment some nights. Bathing in lake (cold) and walks nearby.
